What is EDS Treatment in Dentistry?

EDS impacts the body’s collagen and causes loose, frequently dislocated joints. When that involves the head, neck, and jaw areas, it often results in dental, TMJ, and craniofacial pain and sleep disorders.

The diagnosis

The TMJ Treatment Center team has been working with EDS and hypermobility patients for decades. Patients answer a series of questions related to hypermobility, pain, sleep, and other habits, followed by the doctor testing their neck, back, and jaw muscles to understand their specific symptoms. In addition to tests done by a dentist, genetic profiling by a specialist is often recommended to confirm an EDS diagnosis if patients are showing symptoms indicating EDS.

The Treatments

Treatment for EDS and hypermobility is unique to each patient and can include:

Appliances

Molded specifically to each patient, bite appliances can typically eliminate about half of the head, neck, jaw, and other pain.

Cervical muscle activation

Patients learn how they can use their own muscles to stabilize the head and neck.

Physical therapy

Doctors refer patients to physical therapists to help them work with EDS patients’ unique needs in order to help strengthen patients’ vertebrae.

Medication

Prescription pain relievers and muscle relaxants may be prescribed to help stop the involuntary teeth grinding while patients sleep.

Botox

Botox treatments reduce the head and neck movements that cause severe headaches and pain. This treatment is an efficient and effective non-surgical option for patients.

The Results

TMJ Treatment Center EDS patients have seen significant improvements in the intensity of jaw and neck pain, headaches, and bite stabilization, many within the first few visits.
